After the City of Charlottesville’s successful summer pilot program that provided composting drop-off services at the City Farmers Market, several citizens inquired as to whether Rivanna’s McIntire Recycling Center could be an interim drop-off location during winter months when the market is closed. So we brought the question to our Board of Directors (comprised of City of Charlottesville and Albemarle County local officials) who unanimously voted the 3-month initiative in!
Though we still are working out the logistics, we are happy to announce that in early January, McIntire Recycling Center will be a food waste and household waste composting drop-off location for City and County residents until the farmer’s market reopens in April.
Bagged compost materials like fruits, vegetables, meats, bones, paper towels, dairy, even fats, cooking oils, and greases will be accepted. We will not accept any non-compostable products or yard waste in these bins. Compost will be taken to the closest commercial composter in the area: Black Bear Composting.
As soon as we know the date, we will publish a blog post and send out a press release!
Here’s to less valuable resources ending up in the landfill and cheers for more composting soil to provide for landscaping, agricultural and gardening needs!
