Have You Thanked a Water Professional Today?

Today, Thursday, June 30th is Water and Wastewater Professionals Appreciation Day! This year the Virginia Assembly voted on this resolution which was conceived by the Prince William County Service Authority and supported at the regional and state level by numerous industry associations. It’s a day to honor, recognize, and thank the thousands of men and women who provide clean, safe, and reliable drinking water to citizens across the Commonwealth 24/7. Taking a “Deeper” Look at our Reservoirs (pun intended)

Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority is among the leading water utilities when it comes to managing algae and the harmful toxins they sometimes produce. We  use an adaptive management approach which takes into consideration the unique “personalities” of each of our water supply reservoirs. We obtain water quality data on a regular basis so we can respond in real time and stay ahead of the harmful algae blooms (or HABs) with treatment before they get carried away in the reservoirs and cause problems at the water treatment facilities. We are excited to announce that the installation of the floating bridge — the first of its kind in Virginia — has been installed at Ragged Mountain Reservoir in time for spring hikers! The floating bridge installation was completed this week by a company from South Carolina who specializes in docks and floating bridges.  It’s important to note that though folks can “walk on water” and try out the bridge, the west side is roped off as the City Parks and Recreation department is still finishing their bio-blitz/environmental study of the flora and fauna in that...

Community Celebrates Drinking Water Week

May 5th’s Celebrate Our Drinking Water at Ragged Mountain Reservoir was a wet, but wonderful event! Folks enjoyed hearing remarks about this significant milestone from Mayor Signer, Board of Supervisor Dr. Palmer, former Executive Director Tom Frederick, and ACSA Chair Clarence Roberts. We also heard from our chief engineer, Jennifer Whitaker, about the historical significance of the area from a dam and drinking water perspective.  It was a day to look back and recognize the engineers, local officials, construction workers, and citizens around the turn of the century who made Ragged...
