Project Description:

The MCAWRRF Building Upfits and Gravity Thickener Improvements Project for the Rivanna Water & Sewer Authority (RWSA) includes renovation and upgrades to the Operations and Maintenance buildings, including the Duty Pump Station, Blower Building, Sludge Pumping Building, Maintenance Shop, and Vehicle Maintenance Buildings, to improve furnishings and address space needs. Additionally, it includes treatment process improvements including addition of electronic actuators for secondary clarifier slide gates, gravity thickener chemical feed, and thickened sludge system enhancements. All work included associated with this project will be located at the RWSA Moores Creek site located in Charlottesville, VA.

Project Description:

The Contractor shall furnish and install approximately: 11,821 linear feet of 30-inch diameter ductile iron restrained joint pipe, including a 144-foot long 48-inch diameter trenchless crossing of Norfolk Southern railroad tracks using steel casing pipe, a 22-foot long 48-inch diameter steel casing pipe pushed under a storm culvert along Cherry Avenue at Highland Avenue; a 15-foot long 48-inch diameter steel casing pipe pushed under a storm culvert along Cherry Avenue at Valley Road Extension; and, 9,473 linear feet of 24-inch diameter ductile iron pipe, including a 233-foot long 42-inch diameter direct bury steel casing across CSX Transportation (Buckingham Branch Railroad) property and a 96-foot long 42-inch diameter trenchless crossing of CSX Transportation (Buckingham Branch Railroad) tracks using steel casing pipe.  Except for pipe lengths installed by trenchless crossings, all pipe will be installed by open-cut trench methods almost entirely within the limits of existing hard-surfaced roads or within an extremely limited area of vegetated/wooded lands.

In order to minimize repetitive disturbances to the surrounding community, water distribution improvements will be performed for the City of Charlottesville.  As part of these improvements, the Contractor shall furnish and install approximately: 240 linear feet of 2-inch diameter cross-linked polyethylene tubing along a portion of Lewis Street from Fontaine Avenue southward to the end of Lewis Street; and, 1,205 linear feet of 8-inch diameter ductile iron pipe along a portion of Cleveland Avenue from Jefferson Park Avenue to Cherry Avenue.

Additionally, the Contractor shall furnish and install minor additional lengths of 6-inch, 8-inch, 12-inch, 18-inch, 24-inch and 30-inch diameter ductile iron pipe for interconnection to the existing system and hydrant installations, as shown on the Drawings.

Summary of Work:

  • Clearing and grubbing
  • Procurement, transportation, and erection of a 16,800-sf metal building, including all doors, fixtures, and dock equipment
  • Design, permitting, and installation of proposed electrical services for power for the new building
  • Road grading and installation of gravel and concrete surfaces
  • Installation, inspection, and maintenance of erosion and sediment control measures (completed in phases)
  • Earthwork (cut, backfill, compaction)
  • Installation of stormwater features (berms, channels, culverts, dry swale and extended detention pond)
  • Installation and stabilization of seed, mulch, and topsoil areas disturbed by construction
  • Removal of excess soil, stone, debris, fencing
